How to build a lollipop chart in Tableau?

Objective: Create lollipop chart

A lollipop chart is a great way to visualize data by highlighting the points while maintaining a clean visual axis. In this tutorial, we'll take a step-by-step look at how to create a lollipop chart in Tableau Desktop.

Required data

  • 1 data table, such as the Tableau accelerator Hypermarket (at the bottom of the Tableau Desktop login page),
  • 1 measure, for example Sales,
  • 1 dimension, such as Sub-Category.

Step 1: Build a simple double-axis chart

  1. Swipe the field Sub-category In the Columns,
  2. Swipe the field sales In the Lines,
  3. Duplicate field sales In the Lines,
  4. Right click on this last field and create a double axis,
  5. Synchronize the axes,
  6. Refine your eyesight.

Step 2: Format your graphic in lollipop

  1. In the first SUM (Sales) coordinate system, select the type Barre,
  2. Adjust the size,
  3. In the second SUM (Sales) coordinate system, select the type Shape,
  4. Adjust the size.

Advice

To further personalize your lollipop chart, you can add your own shapes! Customizing shapes allows you to create a unique design for your graphics. To do this, copy your image files to the folder Shapes from the Tableau folder on your computer.
